To accomplish this, the department provides a full range of emergency service responses to such incidents as fires, hazardous material incidents, and medical emergencies as they arise. Additionally, the department provides a number of proactive programs in fire prevention, public education and disaster preparedness.

The Firefighter's Memorial honors three Coos Bay firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty and is dedicated to the sacrifices of all firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty. CBFD Captain Randy Carpenter and firefighters Chuck Hanners and Jeff Common died when a roof collapsed while they were fighting a multiple-alarm fire on November 25, 2002. The memorial is located in downtown Coos Bay in front of City Hall, on Central Avenue between 4th and 5th streets.
