Last week, in partnership with Coos Watershed Association and Community Coalition of Empire, several community members gathered in Empire to add some sidewalk art in several areas. The artwork, simple in nature, was done to draw attention to the storm drain system which drains directly to the bay. While the simplicity of the artwork might be contrary to what may traditionally be deemed as art, this method was strategically selected to ensure a diverse population could participate and it would be easier to maintain over time.
Several sidewalks, adjacent to storm drains, were stenciled with reminder messages that the water drains to the bay and does so without a filter. The stenciling included images of bay wildlife, potentially impacted by the storm drain connection to the bay, and instilling the importance of being mindful about what is in our roadways and storm collection areas. We all play a part in what makes its way to the bay.
This is part of the reason for communications earlier this year about not directing yard debris into the roadways as it impacts the storm drain infrastructure and ultimately the water in the bay. You can read that article again here: Storm Drain Care at Home. There is also additional information shared on the City’s website about other items that should not enter the storm drain system; read that here: Keep Storm Drains and Streets Clear.
Enjoy the photos of the painting event held over two days, August 29-30, 2024. Thanks to all of the volunteers that participated, and to both Coos Watershed Association and Community Coalition of Empire for beautifying Empire in a very educational way.
